I was looking through pictures today. I came across this one of my sister, DeeDee. It makes me smile. It also makes me green with envy every time that I see that hair. Those amazing curls? They are natural. I’ve wanted those curls my whole life. But they aren’t meant for me. I have stick straight hair and always will. Our hair is not the only way that my sister and I are different. She’s a couple of years older than me. I live in Texas and she lives in Florida. Her idea of relaxation is bike riding, hiking, kayaking and other sweat inducing activities that make my body ache just thinking about them. My favorite activities are fishing, reading, fast cars and hunting. My sister is incredibly calm and meditates. I am not calm and have been known to freak out occasionally! Whenever something happens in my life, good or bad, she is one of the very first people that I call. She always seems to know when to let me cry or when to tell me to put on my big girl panties. She never judges. She just loves me. I know that no matter what life throws at me, my sister has my back. I sent her a picture one day that said ,”I have a big sister and I’m not afraid to use her!” It’s true. She’s my security blanket. Thinking back, I remember that we weren’t very close as children. We were so different. She was athletic and strong. I was a big sissy and definitely not strong. But as so often happens, we grew up and realized how blessed we are to have each other. God gave me my best friend when I entered the world. It just took me awhile to realize that. I’m so very lucky to have my sister in my life. We’ve each been through a lot in the last 20 years. But we’ve come through it all stronger and closer than ever. I have heard so many people complain about their siblings. My only complaint about my sister is that she lives too far away. I would be happy if she lived next door. She is my sister. She is my friend. And I thank God for her every day. I love you more DeeDee.
